Garfield Finally Catches Ice Cream Truck

Graeter’s partners with America’s favorite picky and lovable character in Atlanta

ATLANTA (July 10, 2012) – Graeter’s, a 142-year-old family-owned ice cream brand, announced today a new partnership with America’s favorite picky and lovable orange cat Garfield. The partnership, spanning multiple markets – including Kroger’s in Atlanta, will feature in-store signage, retail circulars and social media capturing Garfield’s cynical and overindulgent personality along select freezer aisles.

For more than 30 years, Garfield has filled the hearts of millions with his undeniable humor and wit. Known for his love of TV, disdain for Mondays and ever-passionate pursuit of the neighborhood ice cream truck, Garfield would rather eat and sleep all day than diet and exercise. Garfield was born on the comic pages in June 1978 (making him roughly 34 years old). Today, the strip appears in more than 2,400 newspapers and is read daily by 200 million people around the globe.

“Garfield is an American icon, and we are pleased to share the limelight with him,” said Richard Graeter, president and CEO of Graeter’s Ice Cream. “The Graeter’s family loves Garfield, and we obviously share an obsession for delicious homemade ice cream, too!”

In 1870, Louis C. Graeter began making hand-made ice cream at the base of Sycamore Hill in Cincinnati. A tremendous success, the business grew steadily for many years, passing to each successive generation of the Graeter family. Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, Graeter’s still makes ice cream like it was made 100 years ago, just 2 gallons at a time using the French Pot process and original recipes.

Garfield, just is the latest celebrity who enjoys Graeter’s ice cream. In fact, Graeter’s has attracted the attention of Hollywood over the years with celebrities like Oprah, Dr. Oz, Sarah Jessica Parker, George Clooney, Bobby Flay and even Garfield creator Jim Davis.

"I'd like to think Graeter's and Garfield are in the same business. We both aspire to make people smile, although Graeter's is undoubtedly the sweeter of the two," said Garfield creator Jim Davis. "When Graeter's ice cream was introduced to me, I was sold. It's an honor to have Garfield associated with such a quality brand and I hope the presence of my persnickety cat will help introduce the brand to even more ice cream lovers across the country."

About Graeter’s: Graeter’s ice cream is a renowned brand made in Cincinnati, OH, with national prestige that still faithfully uses century-old recipes and methods of production. Graeter’s has perfected the traditional French Pot process, making the world’s finest ice cream just two gallons at a time. Liquid bittersweet chocolate is poured in just as the ice cream is finishing, creating Graeter’s signature chocolate chips.
