4th-generation owner, Richard Graeter, was spotted in Chicago this week scouting potential new store locations!

Fritz Burgher, of Chicago Business, writes:

Cincinnati-based family ice cream company Graeter's is looking to expand its business to Chicago.

CEO Richard Graeter is coming to Chicago this week to check out four sites that could help establish the ice cream shop in the Chicago market. The company has 40 retail locations in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

By opening shops in Chicago, Mr. Graeter hopes to increase brand awareness and drive more sales for the nearly $40 million-a-year company.

“It's a great Midwestern city,” Mr. Graeter said. “It's been underserved for premium ice cream, and we've had customers from Chicago telling us for years we should open up a location here.”

In total, Mr. Graeter wants to open 10 to 15 new locations around the country. The plan is to focus on one market at a time, open two or three locations and then continue expanding.

Beyond Chicago, he is also considering Nashville, St. Louis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Charlotte, North Carolina.
